Definitely felt this and resonate with your process as well.

And now…watching people (like I’m seeing here in the comments) accuse you of using AI while writing about spotting AI is the new ironic twist.

We have officially entered the phase where sounding competent is suspicious.

I think that’s so interesting. Yeah. I mean, I think a big reason there is that AI *is* really good at a lot of these things now.

(Reposting comment here because I accidentally replied on my read-only account.)

Thank you, Amanda.

This is especially clear when it comes to articles that are written by writers for blogs.

Using AI to do the outline seems acceptable enough, but the entire article or sections of the article unedited is not acceptable at all

This is odd because your post seems clearly written by AI also

Interesting! Sadly, this is all me.

There's a pretty good AI detector (right now at least), called Pangram, though it's an arms race out there. This piece about the uncanny quality of LLM writing really stuck with me. https://hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/how-to-tell-if-something-is-ai-written

Reminds me of a great Threads convo I was part of recently. Some of us millennials who have worked in digital media for like 15 years have a spidey sense for what is inauthentic. https://www.threads.com/@sami/post/DTiQOFGDUk2?xmt=AQF0i9Mh0RywDLURod70ktjQ0oS4YpKU9VYPlQQ0J9d4N9UYlWMCz_q6kDEZV6Rhscckabms&slof=1

As I get ready for the upcoming college application season, I know I'm going to read more of these overly-polished AI-assisted essays. I look for those extra details that don't matter, like the crummy Costco croissants, or their yummy pesto (I'll trust you on both counts). Those kinds of details are what keep me reading.

This seems very AI-ish for a post critiquing AI. And the blithe assertion, "So yeah. I know when you didn’t write that..." comes off as very self-satisfied and self-assured.

And dropping the "On..." in the subtitle for just "Developing..." would come off as much less self-important. This isn't a Montaigne essay.

Interesting. Unfortunately, this is me. I often write “On doing blah blah” as a placeholder subheadline and come back to it to later, but this time I kept it.
